2010 Archery
Reports
Again we let our archery clients tell you like it was. This season we had a total of six archery clients. Two archers wounded bulls and one archer killed a bull. All archery hunts were in Montana this year.
September 4-September 10
Darcy Floreani, Cincinnati , 0 H. 513 - 850 - 4838 guided by Chuck Hall
I wanted a real hunt on public land and I got it here. I was on a five-day hunt and heard bugling bulls every day. The bulls weren't quite ready to come to our calls so Chuck was all over the mountains finding them. Day two had a herd of a five cows charging at us with a bull maybe 50 yards away. Day four saw the most excitement with a bull bugling and raking the bushes with his horns. The wind gave us away so we had no luck on him. Maybe an hour later we heard a bugle and set up 25 yards from a spike and a cow, with a bull screaming 50 yards away. No luck again but you couldn't tell my heart that. My thanks to everyone here. I learned a ton. The accommodations were great. Annette should open a restaurant.
Chris Kershaw , Vandalia, IL 618 - 292 - 4200 guided by Ray Hill
This was my first elk hunt with Wayne Hill Outfitting. I heard bulls every time we went out. Had bulls in real close but the wind was in their favor so no shot. The second to my last day I stuck a big bull but did not find him Ray says he was a 7 x 7. The last day I was there we went to look one last time, no luck. Lots of rain. Ray was my guide he knows everything you need to know about elk hunting. The food was great, the hunt was awesome and I would like to come back.
September 9 - September 18
Dave Simmons Shady Spring , WV 304 - 763 - 3201 guided by Ray Hill
Second time with Wayne, during second week of archery. Bulls were very quiet the whole week. I had Ray as my guide and I feel very lucky to have had him because he worked really hard to get the bulls to cooperate. Wind was the problem because of the weather. On the fourth day Ray, Zach and Austin worked together to call in a bull (3 x 3) and he saw me at 5 yards. He did a U-turn and stopped at 30 yards. I made the shot only to hit him in the shoulder. Ray looked for quite a while but no blood to follow. Hopefully I will do a better job shooting next time. The accommodations, food and friendship at the lodge is something I look forward to. The operation that Wayne and Annette have is first class. Thanks for a great time and thanks to Ray for the great hunts we had. I hope to come back again and make more good memories.
Wayne Tayman, Chaptico, MD 301 - 884 - 5609, guided by Chuck Hall
First hunt with Wayne Hill, top-notch outfitter, lodge, food, hospitality five star. Hunt was slow, heard a couple bugles first day, saw a spike the second and third day. Rained a couple of days on an off. Got close to a bull on the sixth afternoon, didn't see. Saw small bull last morning. Would highly recommend Wayne Hill. Get in shape. Mountains are tough on you.
Butch Lilly, Ghent, WV 304 - 787- 3100 guided by Wayne Hill
Seventh hunt with Wayne and Annette and my fourth bow hunt. Bulls not talking for the first three days. They started talking better on the fourth day. Then the rain started. Bulls would answer but not come in close enough for a shot. Good hunt with good people but no kill this time. Great food and accommodations as always. I hope to be back soon to try it all again. Sometimes you just can't beat mother nature. Would recommend this hunt for any serious bow hunter.
September 20 -- September 26
Daniel Brown Honea Path, SC 864 - 934-6293 guided by Ray Hill
This was my first hunt with Wayne Hill Outfitting. When we arrived it was rainy and cool. The first day we went out in the rain and we had two bulls bugling pretty good. We tried to move closer but the wind changed and gave us away. We went back in the evening and saw one bull and set up on another only to have the wind mess things up again. On the second day we had a bull bugling his head off on the other side of the canyon. We tried going around to the other side but when we got there he quit bugling. Day number three was full of excitement. The first two-bulls Ray called spooked when the wind changed. The third bull snuck in silently behind us. The fourth bull of the day was a nice 5 x 5. Ray called him right in and I let my arrow fly at 50 yards. He only went 30 yards and he was down. My first elk! Ray Hill is the best there is at guiding for elk. He knows these mountains and elk up one side and down the other. Thanks Ray for an awesome experience and a great trophy to hang on my wall. Thanks also to Zach and Austin for helping me get up in the mountains. The accommodations and food was amazing. Thanks to Wayne and Annette for everything and I hope I can come back soon.
